Requirements / organisational issues

When learning calculus it is common to learn something about differential equations. Sometimes these are called ordinary differential equations (ODE) because they contain the ordinary derivatives for functions of a single real variable. If these ordinary derivatives are replaced by partial derivatives we get partial differential equations (PDE). PDE have numerous applications in the natural sciences which we will often refer to in this course. There is a general theorem on local existence and uniqueness for ODE. For PDE the situation is much more complicated. There are many classes of PDE which behave very differently with regard to existence and uniqueness, For this reason we concentrate in this course on the theory of certain important special PDE (e.g. the Laplace equation, the heat equation, the wave equation) where explicit representations of the
solutions are possible. These are used to illustrate more general features of PDE. Prerequisites for this course other than the basic courses are a knowledge of integrals in higher dimensions (as contained for instance in the course Analysis 3).
